My Photography Journey: How it started

August of 2023, I saw a local continuing education photography course that looked interesting. It was a nature and wildlife course. Before this I had no formal experience in photography and didn’t even have a “real” camera. Up until this point, like most folks I had been using my phone to get photos. Phones are fine but once you see what a larger sensor and lens can capture, you never go back.

I quickly found a used Sony A6000 camera at a local shop – it was in great condition and barely used. The course itself was relatively short, but it proved to be an invaluable introduction to the fundamentals of photography. I learned about aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and composition – concepts that had previously seemed daunting, but now began to click into place. I also learned some of the nuances to capturing animals and nature. Again I was brand new so learned a ton and studied work from some of the greats.

Looking back, signing up for that course was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It opened my eyes to a whole new world of creative expression and allowed me to discover a passion I never knew I had.

I’m grateful for that initial leap of faith, and I can’t wait to see where this photography journey takes me next. If you’re considering dipping your toes into the world of photography, I encourage you to take that first step – you never know where it might lead.

Cheers!
